What is Corporate Challenge?

The Corporate Challenge is a friendly competition among local companies to give dollars, food, and time to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County and join the fight against hunger. Businesses of all sizes are welcome to participate. The Corporate Challenge provides a hands-on, corporate citizenship opportunity that encourages employee engagement.

In addition to fostering friendly rivalry and staff spirit, the Corporate Challenge provides a fun and effective way for company teams to learn about hunger in Santa Barbara County and become involved in building healthy communities. Plus, the challenge provides an opportunity for team building and leadership.

 FUNDS

$1 = 10 points

Fundraise through your team’s webpage, hold an event, or offer incentives. Earn double the points per dollar when team members join the Foodbank Harvest of the Month monthly giving club or when your company matches employee donations.

FOOD

1 lb = 5 points

Drop off food in your team’s Food Drive barrel located in your office, or drop by the Foodbank Warehouse, 4554 Hollister Ave. between 7:00am and 3:30pm, Monday – Friday to donate shelf-stable food items. Make sure staff know it is a Corporate Challenge donation from your company! For donation ideas, check out our Food & Funds Drive poster.

 VOLUNTEER

1 hour = 10 points

From sorting in our warehouse, to harvesting fruit within our community, there is a way for everyone to lend a hand. Register for a volunteer opportunity here. TURKEYS

1 lb = 5 points

November 1st – November 23rd the Foodbank will warmly welcome holiday turkeys at the warehouse. Please let the warehouse staff know your contribution is a Corporate Challenge donation from your company.

In 2015, 13 companies raised over $34,000 and collected more than 10,000 pounds of food during Corporate Challenge. They provided an amazing 272,890 meals to those in need of food assistance in Santa Barbara County.

Santa Barbara Empty Bowls Fundraiser Set for Sunday to Benefit Foodbank

One of Santa Barbara’s most beloved events, the annual Santa Barbara Empty Bowlsluncheon, returns on Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Page Youth Center, 4540 Hollister Ave. in Santa Barbara.

The unique fundraising event benefits the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, which is celebrating over 30 years of eliminating hunger and food insecurity by distributing nutritious food, education and other resources through its own programs and to a network of over 330 member nonprofit partners in Santa Barbara County.

For a donation of $30 or more, participants choose a beautiful bowl handcrafted by local ceramic artists, enjoy a simple meal of soup, bread and water, and take home the bowl as a reminder of the meal’s purpose to feed the hungry in our community. There will also be exquisite silent auctions and great raffle items.

After the meal, attendees will have the opportunity to see what the Foodbank does firsthand through a visit to the Foodbank’s Santa Barbara warehouse facility right next door. Guests are invited to visit Foodbank’s Feed the Future program demonstration booths, blend a smoothie on the human-energy powered bike blender, and enjoy healthy savory sweets. Guests will also be able to see where fresh produce and nonperishable goods are stored.

“I am in awe of the impact this event has been able to make in our community and how beloved it has become,” said Danyel Dean, founder of Santa Barbara Empty Bowls. “This event offers people the chance to participate on so many levels, giving of their talents and resources and deepening the understanding of the work done by the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.”

Last year, more than 1,000 people attended Empty Bowls, which raised more than $146,000 for the Foodbank through corporate donations, ticket sales, a silent auction and a raffle. Empty Bowls has donated well more than $1 million to the Foodbank over the last 16 years to help alleviate hunger in Santa Barbara County and has provided huge community awareness for Foodbank’s mission and work.

October 11 Celebration of Harvest

The Celebration of Harvest Weekend, held over Columbus Day Weekend, is Santa Barbara Vintners’ Association’s annual celebration of the year’s bounty. They have generously selected the Foodbank as the nonprofit beneficiary of their silent auction proceeds. We are grateful for their support!

Vintners take a break from the vineyards and cellars to pour their wines and share harvest tales at the Festival Grand Tasting on Saturday, October 11 from 1:00-4:00PM at Old Mission Santa Ines in Solvang. Throughout the weekend select wineries host their own events, ranging from winemaker dinners, library tastings, new wine releases, and barrel tastings. What is Hunger Action Month?

September is Hunger Action Month, when we ask everyone in America to take action to fight hunger in their community, all month long. Hunger Action Month is your opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on our effort to feed more Americans than ever before. Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, individuals can find the way that’s right for them to make a difference during Hunger Action Month.

How will you get involved? Check out this calendar for some ideas. Our top 3 suggestions are:

  1. If you’re an Santa Barbara County resident, give to the Foodbank through the Bank of America Give A Meal Triple Match beginning September 8.
  2. Donate to the Foodbank monthly through our “Harvest of the Month” club for the greatest impact year-round and select “Monthly” for “How often do you want to make this donation?” Regular donations are greatly appreciated and make for easier budgeting and financial forecasting.
  3. Social media savvy? Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter and tell us what you’re doing this #hungeractionmonth and inspire your friends and followers to take action with these images. Thanks!

Four years ago, Jacob Mansbach volunteered at the Foodbank and saw an opportunity to make a difference. Combining his love for triathlons with his desire to help kids in his community, Jacob has inspired all ages to donate, volunteer and get fit. Last summer, Jacob, now 11 years old, invited an entire team of kids to join him in completing the Santa Barbara Triathlon. The team (comprised of third to seventh graders from the Santa Barbara and Goleta School Districts) dedicated their summer break to volunteering for the Foodbank, raising money and awareness, and learning all about the sport of triathlon. Together, they raised over $20,000 to provide nutrition and education to kids and families in our community through the Foodbank. The team’s work also led $10,000 worth of milk coupons for the Foodbank network from Feeding America. To date, Jacob and his team have raised over $57,000 for the Foodbank.

This summer, Jacob and the Join Jacob team are back! There are a few new kids on the team this year and the whole team is out raising awareness and $10,000 for the Foodbank. Your donations will provide healthy, nutritious food for kids across our county as well as provide them with nutrition education through the programs offered by the Foodbank. Thank you for supporting this team of kids by making a donation today!

In 2014, Jacob was selected by Disney to be featured in their online series “Disney Citizen Kid” focusing on ordinary kids doing extraordinary things. His Citizen Kid video focuses on his ability to get kids and families involved through activities like Saturday Family Day, a Foodbank volunteer program. On the second Saturday of every month (9:30 – 11 am) , the community is invited to come visit the facilities, tour, and take part in a volunteer project.
