The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is looking for a Diabetes and Nutrition Educator who will be responsible for teaching a series of nutrition classes to diabetic and pre-diabetic participants in Santa Barbara. The nutrition classes are part of the Diabetes Impact Group program (DIG) of the Foodbank. DIG aims to reach out to food insecure families who have one or more family members with diabetes. The uniqueness of this program is that nutrition classes will be combined with access to diabetic-proof food packages for the duration of half a year. We operate with the understanding that people whit diabetes who are also food insecure can benefit more from nutrition classes if they are supported in getting access to healthy foods. The overall goal of DIG is to improve eating patterns, clinical outcomes, self-management skills and overall quality of life by providing nutrition education and healthy foods to participants.


The responsibility of the educator is to improve participants’ knowledge of healthy nutrition as well as to improve their self-management skills by promoting changes in eating behavior and teaching ways to achieve this. The curriculum is inspired by the AADE7 Self Care Behaviors but has a strong focus on how healthy foods can support diabetes self-care. Each nutrition class involves a cooking component through which participants learn how to prepare healthy meals that help them to manage and improve their diabetic condition. The Diabetes & Nutrition Educator works closely with one or two (depending on class size) volunteer education assistant(s) who will assist the diabetes educator before, during and after class. The education assistant will also have a communicative role to ensure that knowledge is transferred successfully to the participants.


  • Prepare and teach a series of four diabetes education and nutrition classes (2.5 hours each) to food-insecure diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals, guided by a curriculum designed by the Foodbank.
  • Cooperate closely with the education assistant(s) on practicalities (e.g. course materials, attendance, preparation for cooking component of class, evaluations etc.) and further content of the classes.
  • Report on a regular basis to Community Programs Coordinator on how classes are going and suggest adjustments, if needed.
  • Facilitate the collection of (survey) data from participants during the first of the four classes that enables an evaluation on the impact of the DIG program.


  • Certified Diabetes Educator (preferred)/Registered Dietician/Nutritionist or comparable work experience
  • Background in nutrition
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Great communicator and motivator
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting low-income and underserved populations
  • Experience in working with people that typically have only a high school education degree
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships
  • Strong intercultural skills
  • Bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish. Classes are taught in Spanish
  • Experience in teaching diabetes education classes preferred
  • Comfortable with working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy. Includes time management skills.
  • Flexible to adjustments to the DIG program (if needed)


Hourly rate:  Depends on experience

Maximum # of hours per series of classes:  Max. # of 30 hours over a time period of 4 weeks, including +/- 10 hours of teaching.

Commitment:    The first class series will begin in the first week of winter/spring 2018. A second series of classes will begin in spring/summer.
