A portion of Highway 154 remains closed at the Alamo Pintado Creek Bridge. Caltrans has not said when they expect that road to reopen. Caltrans continues repairs at the bridge abutments impacted by running water caused by drain failure. Due to that closure, a helicopter will be dropping food off to residents in the area. This is in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Foodbank.

Santa Barbara County’s Food Rescue Effort Gets Extended Two Years

Every year, Santa Barbara County residents chuck an estimated 2,177.74 tons of edible food in the trash; much of that winds up at the Tajiguas Landfill, where it’s composted and converted into methane gas and then electricity. Since January 2022, an estimated 510.417 tons have been diverted from the landfill and donated to a myriad of nonprofit “food rescue” organizations such as the Foodbank or Veggie Rescue. This is all part of a state law that went into effect in 2022 ​— ​SB 1383 ​— ​to encourage food rescue, feed the hungry, and keep edible food out of state landfills.

Friday morning, volunteers in Santa Maria helped make a holiday dinner possible for hundreds of people in need. “Today we are actually giving away some turkeys and chickens, some fresh produce, some really good canned food and staple items that can get people some healthy meals during this season,” said Laurel Alcantar, senior development manager for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. Volunteers and staff with the Foodbank hosted its second holiday food distribution event of the winter season Friday, just weeks after running out of supplies during their drive-thru distribution that took place ahead of Thanksgiving.

Chumash Join Fight Against Food Insecurity in SB

Food insecurity is a great source of stress for nearly one in four members of the Santa Barbara County community. It is only exacerbated during the holiday season. On Dec. 6, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians donated both time and money to the Santa Barbara Foodbank’s Santa Maria warehouse. The Chumash donated $75,000 out of a total $150,000 gift, while also volunteering their time for a few hours.
