Backyard Bounty Gleaning Opportunities – Santa Barbara, CA

Many people think of fall as the classic harvest season, but in Santa Barbara we are fortunate to have such good weather year round that some of our biggest harvests take place in December, January and February! Help the Foodbank rescue the most fresh, most local produce possible for use in all of our programs. It’s a fun, outdoor activity that can also be a great group activity for families, friends and corporate groups. 


Kids Farmers Market Nutrition Educators – Santa Barbara, CA

Location: Brandon Elementary (Goleta, CA)

Between November and May, lead an afterschool Kid’s Farmers Market nutrition education class for children ages 5 to 12 on every 4th Wednesday from 3:00PM to 4:30PM. The 90 minute class covers how fruits and vegetables are grown, how they are cooked and used, and what makes them nutritious. It also includes some cooking with the kids! Enthusiastic individuals are encouraged to participate! 


Brown Bag Home Delivery Driver – Santa Barbara, CA

Location: Santa Barbara Warehouse – 4554 Hollister Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93110
Date/Time: 1st Wednesday of every month 10:30am to 12:00pm

This volunteer opportunity has the volunteer picking up prepacked bags of food for home delivery to homebound seniors. The driver will use their own personal vehicle to pick up no more than 10 bags total to drive a designated route, deliver the food to the program participant and fill out the corresponding paperwork necessary.


Grocery/Bread Rescue Co-Pilots – Santa Barbara, CA

Date/Time: Weekdays 7:30am – 11:30am

Every day, the Foodbank is able to rescue thousands of pounds of food from local grocery retailers and stores. We can’t do this without awesome volunteer help. While we are largely covered on drivers, we would love co-pilot volunteers able and willing to join the driver on the route, help pick up donated goods and unload them at the Foodbank. This volunteer opportunity requires lifting up to 45 pounds and being able to stand/bend for up to three hours. If you are available for one day a week on a consistent basis, reach out to learn more about this opportunity. 


Food Literacy in Preschool Nutrition Educator – Santa Barbara, CA

Location: Multiple sites throughout Santa Barbara County

Lead a nutrition education class for preschoolers that is designed to promote lasting memories of fun with fresh fruits and vegetables! You will be the lead volunteer in teaching the kids about the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables. Once per month, October through May, you’ll focus on a different fruit or vegetable- talking about it and even tasting alongside the kids.


Teens Love Cooking Assistant Nutrition Educator – Santa Barbara, CA

Volunteer hours will include supporting the Lead Volunteer Nutrition Educator, grocery shopping, support in instruction/food demo, preparation and clean-up. Located at school or community based organization in Santa Barbara or Goleta.


Enjoy a Saturday Work Party at Mesa Harmony Garden – Santa Barbara, CA

Date/Time: Every Saturday – 9:00AM to 12:00PM

Come join the fun at Mesa Harmony Garden, the local food forest producing fresh produce for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. Planting, watering, pruning, mulching and harvesting are just some of the regular volunteer activities at Mesa Harmony Garden. Activities will depend on what is available weekly and seasonally. They will work with any way you are willing to pitch in!


 

North County Featured Opportunities


Teens Love Cooking Assistant Nutrition Educator – Lompoc, CA

Date/Time: One class a week for seven week program (2-3 hours per week)

Volunteer hours will include supporting the Lead Volunteer Nutrition Educator, grocery shopping, support in instruction/food demo, preparation and clean-up. Located at school or community based organization Lompoc or Santa Maria or Guadalupe


DIG (Diabetes Impact Group) Food Box Distribution – Lompoc, CA

Location: corner of “Chestnut” and “I” street in Lompoc (El Camino Community Center)
Date/Time: Every other Wednesday afternoon or evening

The volunteer oversees the distribution of the food boxes for food insecure people with diabetes at the food distribution site. Assist the driver with unloading, fill out required paperwork accurately. build up a relationship with the participants of this program; you are curious to know how they are doing and you encourage them to cook healthy foods and you inform yourself on the content of the boxes before you give them out. You encourage the participants to use the products in the box.

Date/Time: 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month

We are looking for people able to step in as back-up drivers when our designated drivers are not available. Viable volunteers should have a clean driving record and current driver’s license,  be able to lift up to fifty pounds and be able to ensure the proper paperwork is filled out when deliveries are made.
